National Concert Band Festival (NCBF)
WBCB participated in NCBF regional events for twenty years (1988 – 2008) and it was certainly a key factor in aiding our progress, particularly the input from the late Trevor Sharpe, an absolute wind band genius. In many of those years the band was invited to take part in NCBF's National Festival at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester. In 1995 and 2003 the band achieved the Gold Award for Community Wind Bands at the RNCM (the festival's top award). Another sign of the band's success at these events could possibly be measured by the number of comfort breaks taken on the coach journey back to Bristol! Seriously, there were some outstanding performances of works by Edward Gregson, Guy Woolfenden, Georgy Salnikov, John Barnes Chance and others, not to mention that memorable performance of the Weber Concertino for Clarinet by ‘The Three Stooges’ which took the top soloist award.
Our association with NCBF led to us being invited to share a concert with the National Youth Brass Band of New Zealand at St George's, Brandon Hill over the Easter weekend of 2003. Our programme included Percy Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy, Guy Woolfenden's Illyrian Dances, while then-principal flautist Michelle Krawiec performed the Chaminade Concertino for flute.
